Please join us on Thursday from 6:30-8:30pm for a celebration of the life and work of American painter Mark Rothko. The fourth graders’ invitations to you, which they created on the laptops using Pages and KidPix, were sent home last week, so if you didn’t get it check your favorite fourth grader’s backpack! We have been working hard, and we are excited to share our learning with...

We are exactly a week away from the Great Artists Grand Finale! The past few weeks have flown by! I am looking for some items and some helpers: If you have white twinkle lights that we can borrow, please bring them in. Help me return them to you by labeling the strands with your name on a piece of tape. We will also need several lamps (classy but plain) to put around the room for ambiance. On...

Great Artists
Above is the Rothko painting that inspired our tapestry. And below is our work-in-progress tapestry! Below is the Rothko painting we’re reproducing on our banner, and a picture of the fourth graders painting the banner. Today we started working on our individual canvases, and they are already taking shape!

Greek Mythology
Great Artists is in full swing! Our Greek mythology study has been a favorite with the class this year. The fourth graders each chose a Greek god, goddess, or hero to research, and then they wrote essays and found illustrations. Some chose to present their essay on a posterboard, and some made books. We are now experts on Poseidon, Achilles, Aphrodite, Artemis, Hermes, and Hades! We are also...

Mission Projects
This week, the fourth graders presented their mission projects, a joint project between home and school. In class, each student researched a mission of their choosing, took notes on notecards, organized the information, and wrote an essay. They found and captioned pictures and bound everything into a book. They shared their books along wtih the choice project they completed at home. We had a great...

Our Trip to Torrey Pines
Today the third, fourth and fifth graders took their second trip to Torrey Pines. The students, led by our science teacher Kim and the rangers, measured how many native and non-native plants were in the area and recorded the data. This information is used by the rangers in determining the next steps in reintroducing native plants to the area to encourage native wildlife to return as well. What a...

How are fourth graders similar to spiders?
Our Great Artist, Mark Rothko, was influenced by Greek mythology, so we have been studying the gods, goddesses, and stories of ancient mythology. Last week, we read the story of Athena, goddess of weaving (among other things), who competed with a mortal girl, Arachne, in a weaving contest. At the end, Athena, upset with Arachne’s beautiful work, turned her into a spider – an arachnid! The fourth...

Read Across America Day!
Today was a special day at TCS: not only was it the 100th Day of School, it was also Read Across America Day! In honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday, we spent 2010 seconds (about 33.5 minutes) reading. We even got lucky with the weather and were able to enjoy a sunny afternoon outside! Of course, the highlight of the day was dressing in pajamas and eating yummy pancakes for lunch. Thanks to the...
