Reading Requirements and Suggestions for the Summer Before Fifth Grade
“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.”- Dr. Seuss
Required Fifth Grade Reading
The fifth graders are required to read the following novel this summer as part of One Book, One School effort this year. We will use this novel as an introduction to our reading curriculum and as a basis for our back-to-school discussions and activities.
Three Cups of Tea: One Man’s Journey to Change the World… One Child at a Time- Young Reader’s Edition by Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin, adapted by Sarah Thompson
The following list was compiled by former fifth grade students. They based their suggestions upon favorite novels that they have read in and out of school. The fifth graders must read at least one book of their choice this summer. They are encouraged to consider their interests when selecting novels. We will draw upon these novels to complete a writing activity. Please choose one book from the following selections (if a series, choose only one of the books, preferably the first):
The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle by Avi
Iron Thunder by Avi
The Green Knowe Series by L.M. Boston
Kingdom Keepers by Ridley Pearson
The Sisters Grimm by Michael Buckley
Students are encouraged to seek out other sources of reading material that sparks their interests, i.e. newspapers, magazines, online articles, current events, etc. Students should get in the habit of keeping up with current events on a regular basis, as this will be incorporated into our weekly classroom routine. The following online sources provide age-appropriate news headlines:
